Jungwon

“Jungwon,” meaning “garden” in Korean, is a mixed media series exploring renewal, cultural memory, and womanhood through hanbok. Yubi gives discarded hanbok and kimono fabrics new life, while fabricated and stitched details honor the artistry of gyubang women, whose textile practices expressed creativity and han—sorrow, longing, and unspoken emotion—amid the restrictions of Joseon society. Layered with paint, pressed florals, photography, vintage materials, and repurposed textiles, each work becomes a garden where tradition is transformed and blooms into new freedom. Yubi’s self-designed hanbok extends this renewal, reimagining tradition through a contemporary, personal lens.

“Jungwon(정원)” 전시 시리즈는 한복이라는 시각적 언어를 통해 재생, 문화적 기억, 그리고 여성성을 탐구하는 혼합매체 연작이다. Yubi는 버려진 한복과 기모노 원단을 작품에 활용하여, 한때 누군가의 삶과 시간을 담았던 천에 순수미술 작품으로서의 두 번째 생명을 부여한다. 조선시대 사회적 제약 속에서도 규방에서 섬세한 직물 예술을 통해 자신만의 창조적 세계를 가꾸었던 여성들의 예술성을 기리며, 그 안에 깃든 한(恨)—슬픔, 그리움, 그리고 말로 표현되지 못한 감정—을 담아낸다. 회화, 압화된 꽃, 사진, 직물, 오래된 액자등 층층이 어우러진 각각의 작품은 그녀들의 전통이 단순히 보존되는 것이 아니라 새로이 자유롭게 피어나는 하나의 ‘정원’이 된다. Yubi가 직접 디자인한 한복 역시 이러한 메시지를 이어가며, 전통적 형태를 동시대적이고 개인적인 시선으로 재해석함으로써 또 하나의 새로운 생명을 만들어낸다.
