Secret Guardians is a mixed media collection by artist Yubi Lee that explores the unseen protectors who dwell within her inner world—guardians who shield her from self-criticism and nurture her with creativity, warmth, and compassion. Drawing from psychological frameworks in Jessica Baum’s Anxiously Attached and Margaret Paul’s Inner Bonding, these guardians are envisioned as both internal voices and externalized forms: intuitive figures that embody resilience, emotional care, and quiet strength.

They first emerge in the form of portrait photography—printed and painted—where Yubi weaves her Korean heritage with the layered complexities of her cross-cultural identity. At the heart of these portraits is the hanbok, the traditional Korean garment, reinterpreted as a symbolic armor and a vessel of memory. Through the blending of photographic precision and expressive paint, these figures become meditative self-reflections—porous yet powerful, fragile yet grounded. Each portrait becomes a visual dialogue between tradition and transformation, the personal and the collective.

The concept of guardianship expands beyond figures into the realm of landscape. In June 2025, Yubi traveled through Korea, Japan, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, and France, documenting spaces that quietly embraced her. These were not grand landmarks, but rather intimate geographies—coastal light in the early morning, rare botanicals in forgotten suburbs, and mountain silhouettes only visible from specific bends in the road.  To Yubi, the landscape itself became a protector: a silent companion offering refuge, renewal, and space to begin again. These abstracted environments mirror her inner terrain and emotional cycles, blending climate, color, and memory into a world that is simultaneously real and imagined. Place, in her work, becomes personified—a guardian of its own.

In this way, Secret Guardians unfolds as a sanctuary of figures and places that have held the artist through instability, insecurity, and creative evolution. Through intuitive mark-making, layered media, ground paper pulp, and embedded botanicals, Yubi constructs a psychological and emotional ecosystem. The collection invites viewers into this dreamlike inner landscape, where guardians quietly reside—not as loud protectors, but as sacred presences. It is here, in this fertile unconscious terrain, that healing continually begins again.

<내면의 수호자들> 은 유비 작가의 혼합 매체 컬렉션으로, 자기비판과 부정적인 감정으로부터 자신을 지켜주고, 따뜻함과 창의력으로 내면을 보듬어주는 보이지 않는 수호자들의 존재를 시각적으로 탐구한 작업입니다. 이 시리즈는 제시카 바움(Jessica Baum)의 『Anxiously Attached』와 마가렛 폴(Margaret Paul)의『Inner Bonding』에서 말하는 ‘내면의 보호자’ 개념에서 출발하였으며, 예술을 통해 상처받은 자아가 회복되는 과정을 은유적으로 담아냅니다.

유비 작가에게 수호자는 단순히 상상의 존재가 아니라, 실제 인물이나 책 속의 인물, 혹은 무의식 속에서 탄생한 정서적 에너지일 수 있습니다. 이들은 작가의 자전적 경험과 정체성을 바탕으로 시각화되며, 특히 한국적인    정신성과 패션, 즉 한복이 중심이 되어 나타납니다. 여기에 더해 일본, 뉴질랜드, 영국, 미국 등 다양한 문화권에서의 삶의 경험이 더해져, 다문화적인 감각으로 표현된 초상 이미지와 상징들이 작업 전반을 이루고 있습니다.   이러한 수호자들은 인쇄된 사진 위에 채색된 인물화로 등장하며, 그들의 형체는 때때로 추상적인 색채와 재료 속에 스며들어 배경과 경계를 허물며 존재합니다.

이 작업은 인물뿐만 아니라, 풍경을 통해서도 내면의 수호자를 이야기합니다. 2025년 6월, 유비 작가는 한국,   일본, 스페인, 포르투갈, 스위스, 프랑스를 여행하며 다양한 자연과 장소들을 마주하였고, 그 속에서 자신을 감싸 안아주는 장소의 힘을 깊이 느꼈습니다. 도심에서 벗어난 언덕, 해안의 빛, 고유한 식물들이 자라는 작은 정원, 특정 지점에서만 볼 수 있는 산과 물의 실루엣은 단순한 풍경이 아니라, 작가에게 외부의 수호자로 다가왔습니다. 작가는 이렇게 말합니다: “장소는 사람처럼 나를 안아주었고, 그 장소가 곧 수호자가 되었다.” 이런 공간들은 작품 속에서 추상적이면서도 정서적인 풍경으로 재해석되어, 내면의 안식처를 형상화합니다.

이처럼 <내면의 수호자들>은 인물과 장소, 기억과 상징, 외적 세계와 내면 세계가 한데 얽히며 구성된 심리적  풍경입니다. 유비 작가는 이러한 복합적인 층위 위에 레이어를 거듭 올리고, 때로는 다시 지우며, 한 인물의 내면적 치유와 성장의 과정을 드러냅니다. 관람자는 그 안에서 몽환적이면서도 깊은 정서적 공간을 마주하게 되며, 치유가 매 순간 새롭게 시작되는 무의식의 성소로 초대합니다.
